As current and former Special Operators, we know subversion tactics when we see them. Because of this, we recently voiced our strong support to the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs for S.3558, the “Prohibiting Foreign Access to American Genetic Information Act of 2024.” This crucial legislation addresses a growing threat to U.S. national security: the exploitation of our biotechnology supply chains by foreign adversaries.

S.3558 aims to prohibit government contracts with biotechnology companies of concern, effectively barring foreign adversaries from gaining access to sensitive technological sectors. As Veterans, many of us have witnessed the devastating impact of compromised supply chains firsthand. Today, it has become commonplace for state and non-state actors to infiltrate all aspects of our lives, aiming to undermine and sabotage our nation’s defense capabilities. We understand the urgency of protecting critical data from adversaries who intend to exploit vulnerabilities to weaken our national security.

This Act establishes essential safeguards to prevent the misuse of American genetic information, ensuring the protection of military personnel, their families, and U.S. citizens. Additionally, it mandates continuous monitoring and updating of the list of biotechnology companies of concern, allowing the U.S. government to adapt to emerging risks proactively.

The integrity of our nation’s technological advancements and intellectual property is vital to maintaining our defense capabilities. By supporting S.3558, we are prioritizing the security of our country and urging policymakers to swiftly pass this essential legislation.
