As we approach Veterans Day and the 250th Anniversary of the U.S. Marine Corps, thousands of veterans and their families are still waiting for the justice they were promised.
Between 1953 and 1987, over a million people were exposed to toxic water at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune at levels up to 3,400 times above safety standards. This contamination has caused cancers, neurological diseases, and countless deaths among our servicemembers and their families.
While Congress passed the Camp Lejeune Justice Act in 2022, the law hasn’t been implemented as intended. That’s why SOAA stands with over 20 veteran service organizations endorsing the Ensuring Justice for Camp Lejeune Victims Act (HR 4145 and S. 907).
“What happened to the victims of water contamination at Camp Lejeune is a stain on America’s record,” said Daniel Elkins, SOAA Founder and President. “At SOAA, we believe in Keeping America Safe, both those at home, those serving, and those who have served.”
This bipartisan legislation will clarify veterans’ right to jury trials, cap attorneys’ fees, and extend court jurisdiction to expedite justice.
The time to act is now, before more veterans and families lose their lives waiting for the justice they earned.
We applaud Rep. Greg Murphy’s leadership and call on the rest of Congress to join him in passing this critical legislation. Our veterans deserve nothing less.
