SOF Background: Commanded a Special Operations Detachment in Afghanistan

Bio: Alex Thymmons is a first-generation American who was born under the tyranny of communism, learning to read by candlelight amid government rationing. His family immigrated to the United States when he was a teenager. After 9/11, he earned his citizenship and joined the U.S. Army. He served as an infantry rifle platoon leader in Iraq during the Baghdad surge, a military intelligence officer, and a special operations detachment commander in southeast Afghanistan. His awards include the Bronze Star Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, and the combat/gold spurs.
Alex is a small-business owner and community leader. He served as a VFW Post and District Commander supporting veteran PTSD programs and as a Rotary Club President leading humanitarian efforts, including delivering aid to Ukraine in 2022. In 2025 he traveled to Syria to assist efforts to locate missing American citizens. He also served as a congressional adviser on defense, energy, and health policies, helping shape work on advanced nuclear energy, cybersecurity, health care and AI. He holds two masters in international security, a Ph.D. in energy security and an MBA focused on data science. A husband and father, he is running to restore the American Dream through service-driven leadership for Virginia’s 7th District.
