The U.S. Army’s 18X Special Forces candidate program is playing a vital role in growing the Green Beret force, according to Lt. Gen. Jonathan Braga, commander of U.S. Army Special Operations Command. Unlike traditional recruitment from within Army ranks, the 18X program enlists civilians with the potential to endure the rigorous training required to become Green Berets—now making up over 50% of the force.

While the program helps sustain the elite Special Forces, Braga emphasized the high standards required to earn the Green Beret. Many candidates do not make it through the selection process, but those who don’t often become successful noncommissioned officers, strengthening the Army as a whole.
Braga also highlighted the strong retention rates among Special Operations Forces, attributing it to a deep sense of purpose, strong camaraderie, and engaging high-impact missions. However, despite its successes, recruitment remains a challenge, and Braga urged lawmakers to help spread awareness of the program.
With continued efforts to tell the Special Forces story, the Army hopes to attract top-tier candidates who are ready to take on the challenge of becoming a Green Beret.
